Het jaar 2050 wordt volgens klimaatwetenschappers een kantelpunt in de geschiedenis van onze planeet. Terwijl het zeewater langzaam maar zeker opwarmt, smelt het ijs op Antarctica zienderogen. Avontuurlijke Belgen hebben altijd een zekere aantrekkingskracht gevoeld tot deze gigantische ijsvlakte. ‘2050’ brengt niet alleen het verhaal van moderne klimaatwetenschappers op de Prinses Elisabethbasis, maar katapulteert de kijker ook terug naar het jaar 1898, toen de Belgische ontdekkingsreiziger Adrien de Gerlache met zijn schip de Belgica de allereerste overwinteringsmissie naar de Zuidpool leidde.

Eric Goens, bekend van televisieprogramma’s als ‘Het huis’ en ‘Het conclaaf’, maakt met ‘2050’ furore als internationale filmmaker. Samen met zijn crew trotseerde hij temperaturen tot wel -30°C om prachtige beelden te filmen van een ijzig landschap dat wordt bedreigd door het veranderende klimaat.

Naast de poëtische scènes vol immense ijsvlaktes komen ook de zorgen van experten zoals poolreiziger Alain Hubert en NASA-glacioloog Eric Rignot uitgebreid aan bod. Zij verzetten bergen werk om de desastreuze gevolgen van het veranderende landschap in Antarctica te belichten.
