Wat hebben jazzmuziek en de moord op Patrice Lumumba met elkaar gemeen? In ‘Soundtrack to a Coup d’État’ neemt Belgische filmmaker Johan Grimonprez u mee naar 16 februari 1961. Twee jazzmuzikanten, Abbey Lincoln en Max Roach, bestormen de VN Veiligheidsraad en protesteren tegen de moord op Patrice Lumumba, de eerste minister van Congo. Eerdere vergaderingen rond demilitarisatie en dekolonisatie waren al in het water gevallen, tot grote frustratie van Sovjetleider Nikita Chroesjtsjov. De grote dwarsligger, de VS, moeten dringend hun imago opkrikken en zoeken toevlucht in de jazz. Muzieklegendes als Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Dizzy Gillespie en Duke Ellington worden als jazz ambassadeurs naar Congo gestuurd om de aandacht af te leiden van verschillende CIA-operaties.
