Oscarwinnend regisseur Paolo Sorrentino (‘La Grande Bellezza’, ‘Youth’, ...) maakte een kleurrijk en poëtisch portret over identiteit, kwetsbaarheid en de transformerende kracht van zelfinzicht.
In 1950 wordt Parthenope geboren in de Napolitaanse zee. Ze beleeft een dromerige jeugd, maar haar naïviteit vervaagt naarmate haar leeftijd en schoonheid toenemen. Met haar opvallende verschijning brengt ze de mensen rondom haar steevast in vervoering. In de Griekse mythologie was Parthenope de sirene die er niet in slaagde om Odysseus te verleiden en uit wanhoop zelfmoord pleegde. Haar lichaam spoelde aan op de plek waar Parthenope – later Napels—zou ontstaan. Draagt de mysterieuze schone vandaag gewoon de naam van haar stad, of is ze de belichaming ervan? (Bron: FFO)
