Edmond Dantès, een 19-jarige zeeman, komt aan in Marseille om zich te verloven met het mooie Catalaanse meisje Mercédès. Hij wordt echter verraden door jaloerse vrienden, valselijk aangeklaagd als een Bonapartistische samenzweerder, en opgesloten.
Na 14 jaar weet hij te ontsnappen en neemt hij bezit van een fabelachtige schat die verborgen ligt op het eiland Montecristo. Nu hij immens rijk is en niemand hem nog herkent, keert hij terug als de graaf van Monte-Cristo om wraak te nemen op degenen die hem vals beschuldigden.
Deze nieuwe verfilming van de klassieker van Alexandre Dumas is heerlijk episch en groots opgezet, maar toch ook fris en opwindend. Een ware avonturenfilm van het soort dat Hollywood helaas bijna niet meer maakt.
