“Here they grow again!”

Aan Kuru’s favoriete horrorsequels, inclusief ‘Aliens’ (Kuru Cult Night #15) en ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2’ (vertoond in 2022), vervoegt zich nu diabolisch giechelend ‘Gremlins 2: The New Batch’. Van pluisbol tot bruisbal, dit knettergekke vervolg verkast de knuffelbare Gizmo en zijn minder knuffelbare nakomelingen van het rustige dorpje Kingston Falls naar de drukte van New York City. De kwaadwillige creaturen worden losgelaten in een multifunctionele, ultramoderne wolkenkrabber en hebben op slag grootse plannen met de stad. Om te voorkomen dat ze verder cocoonen, ken jij nog de drie regels?

Je moet de regels alleszins kennen om ze te kunnen breken, dat nam regisseur Joe Dante ten harte bij dit vervolg op z’n eigen origineel. Dante stemde toe op één voorwaarde: met het grotere budget te mogen doen wat hij wilde, met de nadruk op wild! De prettig gestoorde regisseur zag zijn kans rijp voor een schaamteloos meta-antwoord op sequelitis dat hij volpropte met passie voor anarchistische cartoons en B-monsterfilms uit de jaren ‘50. Zo speelt sinister icoon Christopher Lee een wetenschapper wiens experimenten het daglicht niet verdragen. Het lukte Dante zelfs om ‘Looney Tunes’-legende Chuck Jones even uit pensioen te krijgen. Door de minder donkere toon trapte hij dan wel serieus op de tenen van de studiobonzen, het resultaat is een flipperkast aan popcultuur en een liefdesbrief die zichzelf vernietigt.

Via slapstick en satire steekt het zooitje ongeregeld van ‘The New Batch’ de draak met de regelneverij, de ongebreidelde modernisering en het woekerende materialisme van Amerika’s consumptiemaatschappij. Als ongeleide projectielen ontpoppen de chaotische Gremlins zich tot een ware nachtmerrie voor de kapitalistische orde zoals vertegenwoordigd door biljonair-zakenman Daniel Clamp. Die doet dienst als parodie op Donald Trump, zij het dan verrassend onschuldig in vergelijking met de huidige karikatuur. Voor de anti-intellectuelen onder ons: geen zorgen, de Gremlins blijven natuurlijk ook gewoon erg geinig om bezig te zien. Met dank aan de speciale (make-up)effecten van niemand minder dan Rick Baker, die erop stond de schepsels deze keer kleurrijker te maken. Ze zijn letterlijk en figuurlijk meer geanimeerd.

You’ve got to know the rules to break ‘em, though, which director Joe Dante took to heart for this sequel to his own original. Dante agreed on one condition: to do whatever he wanted with the bigger budget! The pleasantly deranged director saw his chance for a shameless meta-answer to sequelitis, that he crammed with a passion for anarchist cartoons and 50s B-monster movies. Sinister icon Christopher Lee plays a scientist whose experiments can’t stand the light of day. Dante even managed to get ‘Looney Tunes’ legend Chuck Jones momentarily out of retirement. Due to the less dark tone, he may have seriously stepped on the studio bosses’ toes, but the result is a pop culture pinball machine and a self-destructing love letter.

Through slapstick and satire, the mocking motley crew of ‘The New Batch’ ridicules rules, modernization and materialism running rampant in America’s consumer society. Loose cannons as they are, the chaotic Gremlins turn out to be a true nightmare for the capitalist order as represented by billionaire businessman Daniel Clamp. He serves as a parody of Donald Trump, albeit a surprisingly innocent one compared to the current caricature. For the anti-intellectuals among us: don’t worry, the Gremlins are of course also still just a very fun bunch to watch. Thanks to the special (make-up) effects by none other than Rick Baker, who insisted on making the critters more colorful this time. They are literally and figuratively more animated.
